Punk, the beginning of the end.

Punk was the new revolution. It was to define itself in opposition to the ‘baby boom’ generation’s leftover hippies. Instead of back to nature and flower power: acidic artifice. Instead of love and peace: aggressive toughness. Instead of the slick ‘mega groups’ which increasingly dominated rock music: a rough and ready, learn three chords, brash amateurishness. Instead of the Age of Aquarius: No Future.

Whereas all previous style tribes had chosen their sources of inspiration with an obvious historical logic. The punks just grabbed whatever caught their eye. Such sartorial anarchy is central to punk ideology, and it is also this quality which arguably has most directly influenced mainstream style and fashion. From the early 80’s right up the present, only the ‘fashion victim’ has worn a head-to-toe outfit from one design source. Instead, the punks strive to combine the seemingly uncombinable and to do so in a way which demonstrates their own personal, amateur involvement. It is this, rather than ripped frocks held together with safety pins, which constitutes punk’s true legacy.

Many people say punk is dead. Others say punk is still dying. Still others say the story of rock 'n' roll is nearly over.
